Deep Sea Payback: My Son Drowned for Your MISTRESS—Yours Can Rot To PAY! Chapter 1

My son was trapped 1,000 meters underwater, running out of oxygen.

I screamed at my Navy SEAL commander husband.

"Grayson—DEPLOY THE SUB! Theo's DYING."

Instead, he rerouted the ONLY rescue sub.

"I said WAIT. Elara's kid is choking—I'm handling HER first."

So my son died in the black. Alone.

And his precious first love's brat? Just coughed in a POOL.

I divorced him on the spot.

Threw myself into deep-sea salvage like crazy.

Today.

"Cassidy, you're the only expert who can do 1,000-meter rescue."

"$10M. Same waters. Same deal."

I flipped open the client file.

Froze.

GRAYSON THORNE.

I laughed and shoved it back to my partner.

"I won't do it. Let him wait or ROT."

...

"Cassidy, have you lost your mind?"

Kieran snatched the file and slammed it back down in front of me.

"TEN MILLION."

"Do you know how many risks we take to make that kind of money?"

"You say no, fine—but give us a reason."

I just continued my daily equipment check.

"No means no."

"Then look at this."

He flipped to the back of the file.

"The pod's structure is failing. She's got less than twenty-four hours of oxygen left."

"There's a living person in there—a twenty-three-year-old girl!"

My fingers stopped on the valve.

Theo was twenty-three when he died too.

"Cassidy, you're the only one here who can pull off a rescue at that depth."

Kieran stared at me.

"You don't go, she DIES."

I tightened the valve and turned to face him.

"Kieran, you've been with me for seven years."

"When have I ever turned down a job because it was dangerous?"

He froze.

"Then why—"

I didn't answer.

He grabbed my arm, desperate now. "They're paying real money!"

"Not for a hundred million."

I pushed his hand away, voice steady.

"Don't ask why."

"In seven years, I've barely refused jobs. Just trust me."

Kieran's face went red.

He'd been with me for seven years.

Since the day I was broke, diving alone out of some shitty metal shack.

He watched the sea break three of my ribs.

Saw me haul a lifeless kid back onto the deck—vomiting all night after.

But he'd never seen me like this.

"Fine."

Kieran slammed the file shut and tossed it onto the table.

"I trust you."

He walked to the door, then stopped. His voice was muffled.

"But that girl's still alive... If you change your mind... we're ready whenever."

The door closed.

I stood alone in the equipment room, staring at the file.

On the cover, Grayson looked older than it had ten years ago.

But those eyes hadn't changed.

My son had died eleven hundred meters beneath the surface.

And Grayson rerouted the ONLY sub that could reach him—

All because Elara cried into the phone, "Grayson, Lily fell in the water."

She was in the shallow end.

Slipped and swallowed a little water.

I closed my eyes.

My phone buzzed. A message from Kieran.

[The client called again. Wants to speak directly to YOU. You taking it?]

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then typed.

"Do it."

Chapter 2

"Hello? Is this the lead for deep-sea rescue?"

The voice on the other end was smooth. Arrogant.

Ten years, and I still recognized it.

"Yeah. Talk."

My voice wasn't what it used to be.

Ten years of deep-sea work had wrecked it—equipment, pressure, salt. Permanent damage.

"Good. This is Grayson Thorne, Navy SEAL commander."

"I assume you've seen the situation."

"Name your price."

"I'm not taking the job."

Silence.

Then he laughed.

"I don't think you heard me. I said NAME YOUR PRICE. Whatever you want."

"I said NO."

"Fifty million."

No hesitation. Like he was ordering coffee.

"Half up front, half when you bring her up."

"You won't get an offer like this anywhere else."

I didn't answer.

He mistook it for hesitation and pushed further.

"You want equity? Fine. Half a percent of Thorne Marine—"

"Mr. Thorne."

I cut him off.

"I said no. I'm not negotiating."

His breathing got heavier.

"Then tell me why."

"No reason. I'm allowed to refuse."

His tone turned cold instantly.

"Do you understand what's happening down there?!"

"A thousand meters. The pod's failing. That's a human life!"

"I know."

"You KNOW? And you're just—what, refusing me outright?"

He was talking faster now.

"You're the only diver in this region who can dive that deep."

"And you just walk away from this knowing someone's going to die?!"

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Mr. Thorne, that phrase coming out of YOUR mouth is pretty rich."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing."

My voice stayed flat.

"Either way, I can't take the job. Try someone else."

"There IS no one else!"

He shouted.

" already checked every qualified team on the West Coast."

"You're the only one with the equipment and clearance to deploy immediately."

"If you won't save her, at least give me a reason."

"Then I guess you're out of luck."

"You—"

He took a deep breath, trying to control himself.

"Listen carefully."

His voice dropped. Every word sharp.

"I don't care what your reason is. I don't care about your attitude."

"I'm giving you two hours to think about it."

"After that, if this is still your answer... you and your little rescue base are FINISHED."

I closed my eyes. Gripped the phone tighter.

"Mr. Thorne. Save your time for something useful."

"If you waste any more time threatening me—you might not even get her body back."

"You—"

"Good luck."

I hung up.

Kieran leaned into the doorway.

"Boss... that guy Grayson... did he threaten you?"

I bent down to finish the equipment check.

"He can't touch me."

"But he—"

Kieran hesitated.

"He said he'd blacklist the station."

"He can say whatever he wants. I don't owe him anything."

Kieran didn't push it.

But I saw the look on his conflicted face before he turned to leave.

"Cassidy... what happened between you and that guy?"

I tightened the last valve and stood up, wiping my hands.

"He owes me a life."

Chapter 3

Just past midnight, Kieran slammed my door open.

"Cassidy. We've got a problem!"

I sat up. His face was white.

"My daughter—"

"The company she works for just transferred her. From admin to the inspection crew on a deep-sea drilling rig."

My stomach dropped.

"When?"

"Just now." He shoved a trembling hand through his hair.

"She doesn't know anything about this stuff—she studied finance. She doesn't even have offshore clearance."

"Did you call her?"

"Yeah. He's not picking up."

Kieran's eyes were red.

"Her last message said she made it to the platform. Then nothing."

He handed me his phone.

The last text was from half an hour ago.

A blurry photo—gray metal rails, black ocean beyond.

"Dad, I'm here. Wind's crazy. Talk tomorrow. Night."

"Boss!"

Kieran dropped to a crouch, hands over his head.

"I know it was that bastard Grayson. He's coming after ME."

"Don't panic."

"How can I NOT panic?"

He was pulling at his hair.

"Inspection crew on a rig—do you know what that means?"

"Walking the deck in open water. One bad wave and she could get swept straight off—"

"He won't actually hurt your daughter."

Kieran froze.

"He wants you desperate enough to beg me."

Slowly, his knees hit the floor.

"Cassidy—"

"Get up!"

"I know you've got history with this guy. I shouldn't be kneeling."

"But my daughter... she's only twenty-two."

"She doesn't know how any of this works. She's scared of crabs, for God's sake."

"Please. I've been with you for SEVEN years—just save my kid."

I crouched down and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Kieran. Look at me."

He lifted his head. Tears all over his face.

"I promise you Brynn will be fine."

"Then you'll take the dive?"

"I've got other ways to deal with him."

I pulled him to his feet.

"I'll handle your daughter's safety. But this job? I'm still not taking it."

Kieran stared at me, stunned speechless.

Then suddenly—

A deafening roar thundered across the base outside.

The whole room shook.

A black helicopter was landing on the station's pad. Silver logo on the side—Thorne Marine Group.

Grayson stepped out in a dark coat. Two bodyguards in suits behind him.

Then a woman.

I'd seen her before.

Ten years, and Elara Whitmore looked exactly the same.

Perfect makeup. Fragile expression.

Grayson held her hand, helping her down like she might shatter.

"It's them."

I turned to Kieran.

Fear and rage flickered across his face. His fists were clenched.

"Cassidy, they brought muscle—"

"Doesn't matter."

I grabbed my jacket off the bed and threw it on.

"Let's go."

Grayson stood in the middle of the landing pad.

People were already gathering around him.

His eyes swept over the station—rusted shipping containers, equipment piled on the dock, oil-stained cables.

His mouth twisted in barely concealed disgust.

Then he saw me.

His gaze lingered for half a second before moving away again.

He didn't recognize me.

Made sense.

I wasn't the woman he used to walk hand-in-hand with anymore.

"Who's in charge here?"

Grayson's voice. No patience left.

Kieran instinctively glanced at me.

I stepped forward.

"Me."
