Love? Friendship? Family? My Bestie Took It ALL—So I Took the Highway Out Chapter 1

The hotel dialed wrong. But the betrayal? Dead on.

"Mr. Morgan? Your wife Ms. Sutton left her ring in the suite."

I freeze.

Damon Morgan—my husband.

Scarlett Sutton—my best friend.

I run to my brother Landon, shaking. He barely glances up.

"Summer, they've got a kid. Drop it."

"Damon made us hide it. You couldn't handle the truth."

His wife Claire—my ride-or-die since college—waves me off like I'm being dramatic:

"You're both mothers. Stop making a scene."

My husband cheated.

My best friend destroyed me.

My family chose them.

And I'm just the fool who didn't see it coming.

-----

Landon catches the dead look in my eyes. Starts his whole speech.

"Summer, look—we're not twenty anymore. You've got Mia now."

"Just... let it go, yeah? Keep your head down. Deal with it. Better than ending up alone, right?"

My own brother.

Sitting here telling me to eat shit and smile.

Claire grabs my wrist, voice dripping with fake concern.

"He's not wrong, Summer. At our age? What woman gets a second chance?"

"And Scarlett—god, she didn't have a choice. Her family went under. Debt collectors everywhere. She got auctioned off. Damon saved her. What was she supposed to do?"

My chest caves in.

The three of us—me, Claire, Scarlett—we were inseparable since middle school. Swore we'd be sisters for life.

And now she's making excuses for the woman who's been fucking my husband.

People always pick a side.

Doesn't matter that I took eight stitches defending her from some creep. None of it matters.

I yank free.

"Claire. We're done. Don't call me again."

She freezes.

The door slams open.

Damon storms in, eyes locked on me like I'm the problem.

Landon and Claire slip out fast.

Now it's just us.

Damon stops right in front of me.

"What the hell are you doing here? Trying to blow up my office?"

Years together. And this is the first time he's looked at me like I'm nothing.

I choke down the lump in my throat.

"What did I do, Damon? Why her? My best friend? You've got a kid with her—how long were you gonna keep lying?"

He sees the tears, sighs like I'm exhausting, then pulls me against his chest.

"Babe. She's not replacing you. Calm down."

My throat burns.

I shove him off.

I don't share.

His jaw tightens.

"Summer. You wanna go to court? Fine. I'm taking Mia. And you know how that ends. You really want her struggling?"

I stare at him like he's a stranger.

The man I loved is threatening to take my daughter.

He catches my hesitation, softens just enough.

"Just drop it. You and Mia stay comfortable. You're still Mrs. Morgan. Still respected."

I bury the plan forming in my head. Nod once.

From that day on, I play along.

Drop Mia at school. Wave at the moms. Tuck her in at night.

Stop asking where Damon's been.

Stop waiting up.

But behind the scenes? I'm building a case.

Then she shows up.

Scarlett.

Standing on my porch, all nervous energy.

I used to feel sorry for her.

Single mom. No man in sight. Barely making it.

So I helped. Bought her kid clothes, toys, formula. Practically raised him.

I even got Damon to cut her checks.

God. They must've been laughing at me the whole time.

She walks up, voice careful.

"Summer. Can we talk?"

I stop. Don't blink.

"Say it."

She bites her lip, glances around, drops her voice.

"I never wanted it to go this far. Damon and I... we've been together for years. Our son's older now. I just want everyone to move on."

"I never meant to hurt you. But you can't control who you fall for."

I laugh.

"Don't play the victim."

I lock eyes with her.

"Let me ask you something."

My voice drops.

"Was it my birthday? Two months pregnant with Mia—that the first time you fucked my husband?"

Chapter 2

Scarlett's face goes dead white.

That's all I need to know.

My birthday. The night Damon swore he'd be home early.

I stayed up till dawn with that pregnancy test burning a hole in my pocket.

He finally walked in at sunrise—shirt ripped, face swollen, blood on his knuckles.

I freaked out and tried to drag him to the ER.

He yanked me close instead, held me so tight I couldn't move.

"God, Summer. Just stay. Don't move. I need this."

All that sweetness? Just guilt talking.

Everything clicks now. All the stuff I ignored.

Scarlett moved right after that night. Said her place wasn't safe. Said some guy was following her. Said a "stranger" saved her.

Stranger my ass.

It was Damon.

"Summer. Come on. We're still friends, right?"

She reaches for me like nothing's changed. I pull away fast.

I laugh—sharp, ugly.

"Friends? The kind that fucks her best friend's husband?"

SPLASH.

Water hits me straight in the face.

Cold liquid drips everywhere. I look up.

Claire's shaking, absolutely furious.

"You think Scarlett wanted this?"

"You've had everything handed to you. You'll never get it."

"God—no wonder nobody's ever liked you."

My chest caves in.

I swallow whatever I was gonna say.

Forget it.

Damon walks up and hands me a tissue.

His voice sounds like he's dealing with a kid throwing a tantrum.

"Summer. Enough. Mia's in the car. Let's go."

Everything inside me goes numb.

Right. My daughter.

I can't lose it. Not yet.

I turn to leave.

A dog charges at us out of nowhere.

Damon moves like lightning.

He throws himself in front of Scarlett, locks his arms around her, starts yelling at the dog.

The dog pivots.

It hits me full speed.

I slam into the ground hard. My hands and knees scrape raw against the pavement.

Security finally runs over and grabs the dog.

Damon's already helping Scarlett to her feet, checking her over like she's made of glass.

He glances at me.

"You good?"

I don't answer.

He just keeps going.

"Taking Winnie to the park tonight. Don't wait up."

The wind feels like knives cutting through me.

I shouldn't have expected anything different.

I walk back to the car.

Mia throws her arms around me the second I open the door.

"Mommy—why didn't Daddy save you?"

"The dog was right there!"

"Why'd he save that lady?"

Even a five-year-old saw it clear as day.

But he didn't.

I bite the inside of my cheek hard and brush her hair back.

"Daddy can't see things up close, baby. Only stuff far away."

She nods, confused but trying her best to understand.

Damon doesn't come home for days.

Then my phone rings.

"Scarlett's sick. Really sick."

"Been to every doctor. Every test. Nothing."

He doesn't even pause.

"Got a feng shui guy. He figured it out."

"Your mom's grave. Too close to Scarlett's mom's."

"Bad energy. Clashing. Making Scarlett sick."

My hand's shaking so badly I almost drop the phone.

"What the hell are you saying?"

His voice turns to pure ice.

"Dig up your mother's grave. Move it."

Chapter 3

Damon's voice is flat. Cold. Like he's discussing the weather.

"Just handle it. Scarlett can't keep suffering because of this."

That one sentence punches straight through my chest.

Can't breathe. Can't think.

Back in middle school, Scarlett and Claire were always at our house.

My mom remembered Scarlett loved her braised pork. Made it special every single time.

And when Scarlett's mom died? Her family was already destroyed. Bankrupt. Buried in debt. Couldn't even afford a coffin.

I paid for everything.

Made sure her mom got buried with dignity.

My mom and I, we gave her everything.

But now?

Destroying my life isn't enough for her.

She wants my dead mother too.

I bite down so hard I taste blood. My voice cracks.

"No. Absolutely not. My mom's been at peace for years. She's staying right where she is."

Wrong answer.

His voice explodes.

"Jesus Christ, Summer! Are you kidding me right now?! It's moving a damn grave! Scarlett's sick! What is wrong with you?!"

CLICK.

He hangs up.

That afternoon? Damon shows up at the cemetery with a construction crew.

By the time I screech into the parking lot, they're all there.

Landon spots me first.

"Summer. Come on. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

He's using his "let's be reasonable" voice.

"It's just moving a grave. Mom's gone. Scarlett's alive. Her health comes first."

I stare at him. My own blood. Throwing me under the bus.

Something inside me shatters.

I walk straight up to Scarlett and slap her so hard my palm stings.

Her head whips sideways. Tears spring instantly.

"Damon, I swear, I didn't ask her to... I just feel so awful..."

Damon's face goes red.

He lunges forward and grabs my wrist in a death grip.

"What the FUCK did you just do?! You don't get to touch her!"

Landon's on me in seconds, yanking my shoulder back.

"Summer! That's enough! Say sorry to Scarlett right now!"

I rip free, voice breaking into a scream.

"Enough?! ENOUGH?!"

"I paid for her mom's funeral! I treated her like family!"

"And what'd she do? Slept with my husband! Had his kid! And now she wants to dig up my mother?!"

I whirl on Landon.

"That's YOUR mom too, Landon! How can you just stand there and let this happen?!"

The sky cracks open and rain hammers down.

Mixing with my tears, my spit, my rage.

Landon's jaw tightens. His voice goes flat.

"She's dead, Summer. It's just dirt and bones. Stop acting like a child."

That's it. The last thread between us? Gone.

Damon's looking at me now. For half a second, just half, I see something flicker.

Guilt? Regret?

Then Scarlett sobs.

"Summer's right. This is all my fault. I should just... I should just disappear. Maybe everyone would be better off if I..."

Damon's eyes go wide and he yanks her into his chest like she's about to break.

Then he looks at me with a voice like steel.

"You hit her. So here's what's gonna happen."

"You're gonna stand right there in the mud and watch while we move your mom's grave."

What...

Before I can move, security's hands are on me and shove me down hard. Knees slamming into wet dirt.

The workers start digging and Mom's headstone tilts.

My whole body shakes.

Rain. Tears. Can't tell which is which anymore.

"Damon, please..."

"That's my mom... she's gone... she didn't do anything..."

"Scarlett's not sick because of her, you KNOW that, you know..."

"PLEASE JUST STOP, PLEASE DON'T DIG UP MY MOM..."

I'm begging. Sobbing. On my knees in the mud.

Damon doesn't even look over.

Scarlett's tucked against his chest.

Smiling.

She wanted this.

CRACK.

The coffin edge breaks through.

I'm kneeling there in the rain in front of my mother's destroyed grave.

And I swear right there, on everything, I will never, ever forgive them.

I collapsed after that. Fever spiked to 103. Spent three days in bed barely able to move.

Then my phone rings and the teacher's voice is panicked.

"Mrs. Morgan, you need to get here NOW!"

"Mia got into a huge fight with another student!"

"They're both on the roof! We can't get them down! This is really bad!"

My heart stops.

Mia doesn't fight. Ever.

What the hell happened?

I'm out the door before I even think.

The whole drive, I'm shaking.

Please. Please please please be okay.

The rooftop door's half-open and I shove through.

And my blood turns to ice.
