My MIL Was Bankrolling My Baby, but My Husband Was Bankrolling His Mistress? Time to Clean Him Out! Chapter 1

Eighteen days postpartum. I held him for two hours now. Arms are killing me. He won't stop crying.

I hadn't eaten anything real in days. Stomach killing me.

Can't do it anymore. Called my mother-in-law.

"Mom... please. I need help. I can't do this."

She didn't say anything for a few seconds.

"Wait. Aren't you at that postpartum place? What's wrong?"

I stopped.

"What? I've been HOME. Alone. Eighteen days."

Her voice went ice cold.

"I booked you the EIGHTY-EIGHT GRAND suite. Full care. Lactation specialist. Everything. Garrett said you loved it. Said the baby looked perfect."

I dropped down to the floor. Phone shaking.

"He told me YOU didn't want me wasting money on 'some fancy place.' That I was being dramatic."

Dead silence. Then she drops the bomb.

"Harlow. Listen to me. The center alone? Eighty-eight grand. Your meals? Ten grand a month. Doctor visits, formula, diapers—do the math. I gave him TWO HUNDRED THIRTY THOUSAND."

Two hundred thirty thousand dollars.

I laughed. Couldn't stop myself.

My recovery money. My BABY'S money.

Never saw one goddamn dollar.

So THAT'S where it went.

Guess I married a thief.

Time to find out what else he's been lying about.

---

Seven months pregnant, my mother-in-law Caroline posted in the family group chat.

"I'm handling Harlow's recovery stuff after the baby. Just sent $100k. Get her somewhere good. Don't let her deal with crap."

Everyone started replying. Congrats. Hearts.

I sent back a "thanks mom" GIF.

That night I'm lying in bed next to Garrett and I'm like, "Your mom's being really nice. I thought she didn't like me."

He was on his phone playing a game. Didn't even look up.

"Nah, that's just her. She says mean shit but she cares. Stop thinking she's out to get you."

I nodded. Rubbed my stomach. Maybe this won't suck as bad as I thought.

But that money? Never saw it.

Right before the baby came, I asked Garrett.

"So that recovery place your mom said. Shouldn't we book it? Good ones fill up."

He looked confused. Then laughed.

"Oh that. Yeah, Mom changed her mind. Said those places are a scam. Eighty-eight grand for a month? She's like, let's save it for baby stuff instead. Makes sense, right?"

I was standing by the sink holding a tomato. My nails dug into it.

"Why didn't she just tell me?"

"You know her. Doesn't wanna look bad. She told me and said to pass it on."

I rinsed the tomato. Didn't say anything.

"What about a nurse? That's like ten grand a month. Way cheaper."

He finally looked up from his game.

"I asked her. She said no. Said she's gonna come do it herself. You'll be fine."

I actually felt touched.

Caroline was a lot to deal with, but if she was gonna come help me herself, that meant something.

"Okay. I won't complain when she's here. Don't want her thinking I'm a brat."

Garrett smiled. "Yeah, that's good. She's tough but if you're nice to her, she'll do whatever."

But she never came. Not during the pregnancy. Not after.

Garrett had work, so every doctor's appointment was just me.

Waiting alone. Getting my blood drawn alone.

One time my blood sugar tanked so bad I almost blacked out at the lab window.

Had to sit outside for like twenty minutes before I could even stand.

Got home and texted Garrett: "Almost passed out at the hospital today."

He sent back a hug emoji.

"I've been slammed, babe. You're a champ for handling this."

I stared at that emoji. Flipped my phone over.

Two weeks later I couldn't deal anymore. Texted Caroline.

Tried to sound nice. Didn't want her thinking I was bitching.

"Hey Mom, I've been feeling like shit lately and the baby's coming soon. Garrett's swamped with work. If you're around, could you maybe come stay with me for a bit?"

She texted back right away.

"Yeah. I'm free this week actually. I'll come tomorrow morning."

Didn't think she'd say yes that fast. Got a little choked up.

Chapter 2

I told Garrett that night. "Your mom's coming."

He was on his phone. "Oh yeah? She finally gave in?"

"Yeah. Said she's free."

"Good." He smiled. "You two should hang out. Maybe you'll stop thinking she's out to get you."

I felt better.

But the next morning, Garrett told me she wasn't coming.

I sat on the couch. Baby kicked.

Rubbed my stomach. Felt like crying.

"Does your mom even wanna help me? I'm huge. Can't do all this by myself."

He sat down and put his arm around me.

"Don't overthink it. She just doesn't wanna mess things up between you two by moving in. She's doing it for you."

For you.

I heard that so many times those ten months.

But I let it go. Told myself that's just how Caroline was.

If she didn't wanna help, whatever. I'd figure it out.

At least she said she'd book the recovery place. That meant she cared. Right?

Then the baby came.

Garrett called my mom. She cried and said she'd come the next day.

Caroline showed up too.

Held the baby for like a minute. Took a pic and posted it in the group chat.

Caption: "my grandson."

Then she goes, "Get some rest. Tell Garrett if you need anything."

Left that same day. Said she had stuff at home. She'd come back later.

My mom came the next day. Brought a bunch of casseroles and some Ensure drinks. Stayed at the hospital with me for two days.

When she left, she was crying. "Honey, where's Caroline? Why isn't she helping you?"

I smiled. "She's busy."

But I knew. She wasn't busy. She just didn't wanna be there.

When I got out, Garrett picked me up.

I asked. "So we going to that recovery place? Or just home?"

"Home. Mom's gonna come help. We don't need to pay for anything."

I believed him.

First day home. I'm on the couch all day with the baby.

My back hurts so bad. Can't sit up.

C-section hurts like hell. Had to get up just to get water.

Garrett's like, "I gotta go back to work. Be home later."

Came back with takeout. Put it on the table. Went to his phone.

I'm holding the baby with one arm. Trying to grab the bag with the other. Took three tries.

Ramen. Cold. Some gross lettuce in it.

"Your mom coming tomorrow?"

"Yeah. Just hang on a little longer."

She didn't come. Not the next day. Not the day after.

I asked Garrett again.

He said, "She's coming in a couple days. Just hang in there."

I hung in there for eighteen days.

Baby cried all night. I woke up like seven or eight times.

My milk wasn't enough. He'd scream and I'd walk him around in circles. By sunrise he'd finally pass out.

I couldn't even pee without putting him in his crib first. Had to leave the door open to hear him.

One time I was so tired I passed out on the couch holding him. Woke up and he'd rolled halfway off my lap.

Almost hit the floor.

I grabbed him. Just sat there shaking and crying.

Those eighteen days I didn't call anyone. Didn't wanna freak my mom out.

Couldn't call Caroline. She wouldn't come anyway. Just think I was being dramatic.

Day eighteen I broke.

Couldn't even stand anymore.

Baby's crying in my arms and I'm so weak I can feel my ribs digging into him. Probably made him cry harder.

I stared at Caroline's number forever. Then called.

Chapter 3

Caroline picked up. "Harlow? What's wrong?"

"Mom... can you come help me? I can't... I just can't do this anymore."

Nothing for a few seconds.

"Wait. Aren't you at that recovery place? What's going on?"

I froze.

"What place?"

"Harmony Center. The VIP thing. I went there myself. Booked it. Pink walls and everything. Even sent Garrett a video. He said you loved it."

I gripped the phone so hard my hand hurt.

"Mom. I never went there. I came straight home from the hospital. Been here eighteen days. Haven't eaten a real meal since."

Her voice changed. Got cold.

"Garrett said you were there. Said you were doing great. Six meals a day. Nurse every day. Said the baby looked great."

My voice started shaking.

"He told me YOU said it was too expensive. That I was spoiled. That I was wasting money."

Long silence.

Then she said something that freaked me the hell out.

"Harlow. I gave Garrett two hundred thirty thousand dollars when you got pregnant."

"The center? Eighty-eight grand. Nutrition money? Ten grand a month. Formula. Doctor visits. Everything. Two hundred thirty thousand."

"Tell me the truth. How much did you see?"

I'm on the floor now. Baby's still crying. My voice barely came out.

"Nothing. I didn't see any of it."

I hear a chair scrape. Then footsteps.

"I'm coming right now."

She hung up.

I dropped the phone on the couch. Sat there with my face against the cushion. Crying.

Twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang.

I opened the door holding the baby.

Caroline was standing there in a gray coat. Hair was a mess from the wind.

Behind her was some woman, maybe forties, holding a food container.

Caroline didn't come in right away. Looked me up and down first.

Then looked at the baby. Tiny little thing all wrapped up.

She stared for a while. Then stepped aside. Let the other woman in.

The nurse washed her hands. Held out her arms. "Give him here. Go sit."

Baby stopped crying the second she took him.

Caroline came in. Shut the door. Stood there in the middle of the room looking around.

Then sat on the couch. Hands in her lap. Didn't say anything.

I sat across from her. Kept my head down.

Then she talked. Her voice wasn't loud. Wasn't mean like on the phone.

It was quiet. Like something in her broke.

"When you were seven months along, I told him you were gonna stay at the best place I could find."

"I went to three places myself. Picked Harmony Center. Picked the pink wallpaper. Told him you were having a girl and girls need something pretty."

"He was right there with me. Took a video. Said you watched it and loved it."

I looked up.

"He told me you said it was too expensive. That I should just stay home."

Her lip trembled.

"After that I sent him ten grand every month. Told him, your wife's pregnant, let her eat whatever she wants, don't be cheap."

"He said you got it. Said you were eating good, sleeping good. But you kept saying I didn't give you enough. Said that's why you didn't want me coming."

I shook my head.

"I never got anything."

Caroline paused.

"End of your pregnancy I sent him thirty grand. Told him take you shopping for baby stuff. He said you said it wasn't enough. Wouldn't even cover a crib."

"What'd you buy?"

I laughed but it sounded wrong.

"Nothing. I didn't know about the money. Got a used crib off Craigslist for three hundred."

Her hands balled up in her lap. Knuckles turned white.

"He told me you were talking shit about me. Said you thought I was cheap. Said you kept comparing me to other people's moms. He said you didn't want me there because you'd flip out if you saw me."

"So I didn't come. Not once. Thought if I showed up you'd lose it."

"That time you asked me to come... next morning he called. Said you threw a fit. Said you changed your mind."

I looked at her. She looked at me.

Caroline talked again. Softer this time.

"So for ten months I kept sending money. Thought you were talking shit about me. You thought I didn't give a damn about you."

I nodded. Started crying.

Then I heard the lock. Key in the hole.

Click.

Handle going down.

The door opened.

Garrett's standing there with a bag of fruit.

Saw Caroline. Froze.

"Mom? What're you doing here?"

He saw her face. Saw me crying. Saw the nurse in the kitchen.

Bag dropped. Hit the floor. Oranges everywhere.

His mouth opened. Face went white.
