Imagine Killing Your Only Grandchild and Smiling About It. My MIL Doesn't Have to Imagine Chapter 1

Some people die without ever knowing why—I was one of them.

Only after I died did I see it—my mother-in-law put carrots in the meatballs. The thing that could kill me.

My husband sobbed. My son cried for Mommy.

Really hit me hard. Until they both forgave her that same night.

Watching a family acting all happy after one of them just killed me, I chose to come back.

Opened my eyes—I'm back the day I got pregnant.

My mother-in-law's smiling, handing me meatballs.

I smile back.

—Hey Claire, guess you have no idea your son can barely have kids.

And this baby? Only shot your family's got.

Wanna bet?

When he finds out you killed it, does he forgive you... or destroy you first?

...

My eyes shot open.

Right in front of me: Claire's face.

Round, smiley, crow's feet at the corners—total sweet mom look.

She's holding a plate of meatballs, just out of the kitchen, still steaming.

"Sloane honey, I made these special for you."

I look down.

Dark sauce all over them.

Most people wouldn't notice anything weird.

But I do.

Because I already died once.

From this exact thing.

Last time—or like, a minute ago—I was in a hospital bed.

Hives everywhere. Couldn't breathe. Throat closing up.

Rhett on his knees next to me, crying, yelling for a doctor.

Didn't help.

Anaphylactic shock. I died.

Why? A dish with carrots hidden in it.

Three months after I had the baby.

Claire made it. I didn't think twice, just ate it.

How was I supposed to know?

She's my mother-in-law.

She knew I was allergic.

I told her the day I married Rhett. He told her too. It's in my medical file.

She knew.

She did it anyway.

After I died, Rhett fell apart.

That very evening, his mom called him crying. "I didn't mean to." "I didn't know it was that bad." "I can't live with myself."

He went over.

Drank her chicken soup.

When I found out, I nearly clawed my way out of my grave.

But now I'm back.

I take a deep breath. Look at those meatballs.

"Thanks Claire. Smells really good."

I stab a meatball with my fork. Pop it in my mouth. Chew twice.

Carrot flavor explodes on my tongue. Almost spit it out by reflex.

I don't.

Chew. Swallow.

Claire's eyes light up.

Just for a second. But I see it.

The look of a hunter watching prey step into a trap.

I swear under my breath. Keep smiling. Grab another one.

"Claire, these are so good. How'd you make them?"

"Oh nothing fancy. Just ground pork, threw in some veggies, an egg."

Veggies?

Right.

I eat another one.

Three down.

Her smile gets bigger.

I put down my fork, pull out my phone under the table.

Text Ivy.

[Me: Ivy, do me a favor. Call me in 30 min. If I don't pick up, call 911 and send them here.]

Ivy's my college roommate. She's an ER nurse at City General.

She texts back right away: [??? what are you doing???]

I don't answer.

Look back up. Keep eating.

Fourth meatball. I feel it starting.

Tongue going numb.

Lips starting to puff up.

Stomach cramping.

Here we go.

I take a sip of soup like nothing's wrong.

Claire's going on about some neighbor drama. Her voice sounds far away now.

Ears ringing.

But I'm not panicking.

I count in my head.

Last time it took about twenty minutes to get really bad.

I've got time.

"Claire," I put down my fork, wipe my mouth. "Gonna use the bathroom real quick."

"Go ahead sweetie."

She waves me off, smiling. Wrinkles so deep around her eyes.

When I stand up, my legs feel weak.

I hold onto the wall, walk to the bathroom, shut the door.

Look at the back of my hand—

Hives starting.

Little red patches creeping up from my wrist.

I look down at my stomach.

Two months.

Claire doesn't know I'm pregnant.

Rhett doesn't either.

Nobody knows.

I take a breath.

Open the door. Walk back out. Sit back down at the table.

"Claire, I'm gonna have one more."

She pauses mid-sip.

Probably didn't expect me to be this cooperative.

But she recovers fast. Smiles. "Have as many as you want. You're too skinny anyway."

Fifth meatball.

I bite in. Clearly taste a piece of carrot that didn't get chopped fine enough.

Chew it up. Swallow.

Smile at Claire.

Thinking—

Claire, your biggest mistake? Not knowing your son's sperm barely work.

This baby's a miracle.

And you just chopped it up and mixed it into ground pork.

Just wait.

Chapter 2

After we eat, I help Claire clean up.

Yeah. I'm doing dishes.

Pregnant woman mid-allergic-reaction doing dishes for the person trying to kill her.

Insane, right?

But I need her relaxed.

Need her thinking she's got this under control.

Need her to say it.

And sure enough—

I'm at the sink rinsing plates when I hear her behind me, all smug.

"Sloane honey, see? Mom told you."

Here it comes.

"That whole carrot allergy thing—I think you're just overdoing it."

"Young people are healthy. You're not that fragile."

She's leaning in the doorway with her tea, voice dripping with "I told you so."

"You always said you couldn't eat carrots, Rhett would get all worried, but really what's the big deal?"

"Look—you ate so many today and you're fine."

I almost drop the plate.

Not 'cause I'm mad.

'Cause my fingers are swelling and I can barely hold it.

But I hold it together.

"You're right Claire," I say quietly, head down. "Maybe I was being dramatic."

"Exactly!"

She smacks her knee, so proud of herself.

"I mean who's allergic to carrots?"

"It's a vegetable. Everyone eats carrots, right?"

I set the plate down. Dry my hands.

Turn around. See that look on her face.

Smug. Triumphant.

"Okay Claire, I'm gonna go lie down."

"You do that sweetie. Rest up. I'll make something even better for dinner."

Already planning dinner.

I turn toward the bedroom. Walking slower now.

Not on purpose.

My legs are giving out.

Vision blurring.

Cramps in my stomach getting sharper. Pulling down.

I hold onto the wall. Breathe.

Not yet.

I push open the bedroom door. Sit on the bed. Pull out my phone.

Ivy's sent me like seventeen texts.

From "what's going on??" to "Sloane if you don't answer I'm calling 911 right now"—full panic mode.

I type: [Wait]

Set my phone on the pillow.

And wait.

Honestly, "waiting for anaphylaxis to kick in" is a weird experience.

Like holding a lit firework in your hand watching the fuse burn down.

Except I'm the firework.

Lips swelling more.

Hives spreading across my neck in thick welts.

Cramps turning into this constant ache.

Then—

I feel it. Something warm running down the inside of my thigh.

Look down.

Bleeding.

I close my eyes.

Hurts.

Not just my body—though yeah, that hurts bad.

But my heart.

This is my baby.

Last life it was my baby too.

Watched him being born. Heard his first cry.

Three months later his grandmother killed his mom with this exact method.

Don't know what happened to him after.

But I bet Claire raised him.

The woman who killed his mom raised him.

And his dad forgave her.

Thinking about it makes me cry for real.

Real ones.

But this is my bet.

I'm betting this time... this baby survives.

Last lifetime, after I gave birth—immune system crashed—the allergic reaction killed me.

Right now my body's still okay. I controlled how much I ate.

If I get to a hospital fast enough, me and the baby both make it.

I struggle to turn my head, grab my phone, check the time.

My fingers are so swollen I can barely hold it.

No way I'm dialing anything myself.

But twenty-nine minutes have passed.

Ivy's calling any second now.

I roll onto my side. Curl up tight.

Blood's still coming.

Soaking into the light gray sheets. Spreading.

I stare at that red stain.

Then scream—

"CLAIRE!!"

Voice cracks. Raspy. Barely sounds like me.

But loud enough.

Hear slippers slapping from the living room.

Claire pushes the door open.

"What's wrong—"

Stops mid-sentence.

She sees the blood on the sheets.

The hives all over my face and neck.

My lips swollen beyond recognition.

"Sloane...?"

Her voice breaks.

I lift my head. Look at her. Tears and snot everywhere.

Use the last bit of energy I have to say:

"Claire... I think... I'm pregnant..."

The look on Claire's face right then—priceless.

Smug to confused to shocked to horrified.

Four emotions in three seconds.

Lands on—

Pale as a ghost.

Chapter 3

Ambulance got there fast.

Maybe twelve minutes. Felt like twelve years.

Half awake when they load me onto the stretcher.

Can hear Claire babbling next to me.

"She just... ate dinner... I don't know what happened... maybe she's just not healthy..."

Paramedics ignore her.

Oxygen mask. IV. Blood pressure cuff.

Hear them talking:

"Allergic reaction, possible anaphylaxis, vaginal bleeding, patient says she's two months pregnant."

"Alert OB and ER."

Roll me into the ambulance.

Claire tries to get in. Gets blocked.

"Only one family member."

"I'm her mother-in-law!"

"Get her husband then. You follow in your car."

Claire's face goes whiter.

Pulls out her phone to call Rhett. Hands shaking bad.

I'm on that stretcher staring at the ceiling lights thinking—

Claire, when you make this call, you figured out what you're gonna say?

"Son, your wife had a reaction, no idea why"?

Or "Son, your wife's pregnant and bleeding, no idea why"?

You gonna say both with a straight face?

At the hospital, everything moves fast.

Into the ER. Blood draw. IV. Epinephrine shot. Antihistamines.

OB comes in. Ultrasound wand on my still-swollen stomach.

I stare hard at the screen.

Black and white. Blurry shape.

Doctor looks serious.

My heart's in my throat.

If this baby's gone...

"Threatened miscarriage. But there's a heartbeat."

She looks up at me. Stern.

"What were you thinking?"

"You know you're allergic and you ate it anyway? You got a baby in there!"

I don't say anything.

Just cry silently.

Heartbeat.

Baby's alive.

Right then, all the plotting, all the pain—

Worth it.

I'm in that hospital bed. IV in my hand. Drip drip drip.

Lip swelling going down but hives still everywhere.

Suddenly—footsteps running in the hall.

Door slams open.

Rhett bursts in looking like I've never seen him.

Guy's usually so put-together.

Suit, tie, poker face.

Investment manager. Deals with millions. Never shows emotion.

Been married three years. Never seen him run.

He's running now.

Shirt untucked. Tie crooked. Sweat on his forehead.

Eyes bloodshot.

Rushes to the bed. Grabs my hand.

"Sloane!"

Squeezes so hard it hurts. I don't pull away.

"You okay? Doctor said allergic reaction? How? What'd you eat?"

I look at him.

Last life he asked me the same questions.

But that was when I was dying.

This time he's earlier.

Still time.

"Don't freak out," my voice still hoarse. "I'm okay. Baby's okay."

"Baby?" Freezes. "What baby?"

I look at him. Watch his face twist.

"Rhett. I'm pregnant. Two months."

Goes completely still.

Mouth open. Can't close it.

Still holding my hand but grip goes loose.

Eyes even redder.

I know what he's thinking.

Low sperm count. Diagnosed last year.

Doctor said: "Natural pregnancy unlikely. Consider IVF."

He sat alone in his office for hours after.

Never mentioned kids again.

Now I'm telling him—

He's got a kid.

Natural. Almost impossible.

"You're... pregnant?"

Voice shaking.

"Two months. Took a test a few days ago. Was waiting for the right time."

"Two months..."

Puts my hand down. Covers his face. Shoulders shake.

Thirty-two-year-old investment VP in a wrinkled suit crouched by a hospital bed crying.

I reach out with my IV hand. Touch his head.

Don't say anything.

When he stops, looks up.

Eyes red and puffy. But expression changed.

Not panicked or happy anymore.

Cold.

Cold I've never seen. Down to the bone.

"Sloane."

"Yeah."

"Doctor said carrots."

"Yeah."

"What'd you eat today?"

I don't answer.

Just look at him.

Then look at the door.

Someone's standing there.

Claire.

Don't know how long she's been there. Face gray. Frozen in the doorway.

Rhett follows my eyes.

Looks at his mom.

They stare at each other.

Air turns to ice.
