My Alpha Chose the Substitute - Oh, This Was the Least of Your Problems! Stay Tuned! Chapter 1

The Moonstone Auction had barely ended when news reached me: my mate's beta assistant had "accidentally" destroyed a million-dollar Lunar Serpent bracelet.

My Alpha covered the cost without blinking.

Moments later, the she-wolf posted online: [My Alpha is so generous! Time to work twice as hard for the pack!]

Then she had the audacity to send it straight to me.

I stared at the screen, my wolf stirring beneath my skin.

A smile curved my lips - cold, calculated.

I reached out through our mind-link: "So I hear there was an incident with some expensive jewelry. Care to explain the damage?"

"Nothing serious," Daniel's voice echoed in my head. "Barely worth mentioning."

"Barely worth mentioning? A million dollars?"

"Wire me three million. Right now."

Silence stretched between us through the bond.

Finally: "Luna, you can't be serious."

I didn't bother responding with words.

Instead, I sent him an image.

His prized Moonphase Chronos - a timepiece from the exclusive House of Nightfall - reduced to glittering fragments across our marble floor.

Three million dollars, shattered.

My phone exploded with his call.

"ELARA HARTLEY!"

His Alpha dominance bled through the line, making my wolf bristle. "That watch is ONE OF THREE IN EXISTENCE! Have you completely LOST IT?!"

"Lower your voice when you speak to your Luna."

My tone could freeze fire.

"The message seemed clear enough to me."

I checked the time.

"You're forty-seven seconds past my deadline. Currently standing in your garage. Want to guess what happens next?"

The line went dead.

Sixty seconds later, my phone pinged.

Transfer complete: $3,000,000

My wolf preened with satisfaction.

I pulled up the next photo I'd prepared - his limited-edition Bloodmoon Raptor sports car, front end completely demolished.

Hit send.

He called back so fast I almost laughed.

"ELARA!!!"

The sound that ripped from his throat was barely human, his wolf clawing at his control. "Do you have ANY concept of what that car COST - "

"Three million eight hundred thousand," I interrupted smoothly. "Imported from the Ironpaw Territories four weeks ago."

"Hurts, doesn't it? Good. Remember this feeling. There won't be a second warning."

He couldn't even form words.

I heard his wolf snarling, fighting for dominance.

The call ended abruptly.

I set my phone down, unbothered.

Let him rage.

Political matings aren't built on affection. If the Moon Goddess blesses you with a true bond, count yourself fortunate. If not?

It changes nothing.

Daniel and I were paired through pack alliance three years ago - a strategic merger between bloodlines. We found each other acceptable enough. Attractive enough. Powerful enough.

Six months later, we stood before the pack and completed the mating ritual.

That night, we retreated to separate wings of the estate.

We even wished each other pleasant dreams as we parted on the stairs.

For twelve full moons after our mating, we never shared a bed.

The first time we did, moonwine had loosened our inhibitions.

The Blackthorn Pack's auction empire stretched back generations - a dynasty built on werewolf antiquities and supernatural artifacts.

Their pack laws could fill a library.

My family?

We were new blood. Nouveau riche, as the old packs sneered. My father had carved out territory in the Western Howling Lands before returning to Silvercrest to legitimize his holdings.

We didn't have centuries of tradition weighing us down.

We still had fangs.

That's why I never concerned myself with whether Daniel actually loved me.

Neither of us would sacrifice pack interests for something as fleeting as emotion.

But THIS?

This beta had publicly disrespected me, flaunted her position, thrown her connection to MY mate in my face.

That, I would NOT tolerate.

What's mine is MINE.

No one else gets to even LOOK at it.

Of course, I knew Daniel wouldn't take this lying down either.

Sure enough, my phone buzzed before sunset.

Scarlett's name flashed across the screen.

"Vic, why is your Alpha parading some random she-wolf around the Shadowpine Estate?"

The attached photo made my blood run cold.

I recognized that venue immediately - the Blackthorn Pack's exclusive client entertainment hall at the Fangwood Manor.

Beside Daniel sat a young female in an overly elaborate gown, practically glowing with excitement at being included in such elite company.

I slammed my phone onto the table hard enough to crack the screen.

My wolf surged forward, eyes flashing gold.

Scarlett kept texting:

[This beta has NERVE]

[She's wearing that bracelet - the one your mate supposedly replaced]

[Wait, wasn't it destroyed???]

I pulled up Freya Monroe's social media.

There she was, draped over Daniel's arm beneath crystal chandeliers, grinning like she'd won the lottery.

Her caption read: [So grateful to Alpha Blackthorn for this incredible opportunity~]

And there, glinting on her wrist - that million-dollar Lunar Serpent bracelet.

The one she'd supposedly broken.

My mind flashed back six months.

Daniel's previous assistant had simply leaned too close while delivering paperwork.

She was expelled from pack territory within twenty-four hours.

Daniel's words still echoed: "The Blackthorn Pack has no place for wolves who can't respect boundaries."

Yet here he was, publicly displaying this beta, broadcasting their connection to the entire supernatural community, letting her wear jewelry worth more than most wolves earned in a lifetime.

I reached out through our mate bond.

Once.

Twice.

Seven times.

He let it go to the void.

"Interesting choice."

I pulled up our private messages.

[Alpha Blackthorn escorts female beta to VIP function. Your Luna awaits an explanation.]

I texted Scarlett: [Did he check his phone?]

[Oh yeah, he looked right at it. Then put it away. Did you call him out?]

I typed another message to Daniel: [I know you saw that. Respond. Now.]

Nothing.

[Ten seconds. That's all you get. Then I act.]

Rain started drumming against the windows.

I walked to my private study, opened the safe, and withdrew a leather-bound journal - pages yellowed with age.

My hands shook slightly as I photographed the cover.

Sent.

His response was instantaneous.

[ELARA. WHATEVER YOU'RE PLANNING, DON'T.]

Chapter 2

Scarlett's text lit up my screen seconds later.

[HOLY SHIT VIC - Blackthorn just went PALE. What the hell did you send???]

I fired back a winking emoji: [Sit tight. Show's just getting started.]

That journal?

It belonged to Aurelia Blackthorn - Daniel's first mate.

The one who never got to complete the bond.

Scrawled on the inside cover in faded ink: "For my sixteen-year-old Alpha. Hope this makes you smile."

Page after page of her feelings. Her dreams. Her plans to confess under the full moon.

She never got the chance.

Rogues ambushed them during a border patrol.

Aurelia bought Daniel time to escape - paid for it with her life while he watched, helpless and bleeding.

That journal was all that remained.

He guarded it like a sacred relic.

And Freya?

Freya looked EXACTLY like Aurelia.

Same dark hair. Same delicate features. Same soft voice.

My lips twisted into something that wasn't quite a smile.

My mate was playing the most pathetic game imaginable - chasing a ghost through a living substitute.

His messages started flooding in.

[DON'T. We can discuss this.]

[Elara, PLEASE.]

[Just tell me what you want.]

I typed back: [Call me. Speaker mode. Now.]

My phone rang within seconds.

"Speaker," I commanded, voice like ice.

Fabric rustled on his end. His breathing came harsh and uneven. "I'm... in the middle of a pack meeting - "

"Did I STUTTER? SPEAKER. NOW."

A pause.

Then a click.

Suddenly I could hear everything - the clink of crystal, the murmur of conversation dying away.

The entire gathering had gone silent.

"Apologies for the interruption, everyone."

My voice rang out clear and cold. "This is Elara Hartley. Alpha Blackthorn's MATE."

I could picture it perfectly - all those elite wolves in their designer clothes, champagne frozen halfway to their lips, staring at the head table.

And Freya, that fake smile probably cracking at the edges.

"I was under the impression my mate would escort ME tonight," I continued, fingers trailing over the journal's worn leather. "Strange that I received no invitation."

"Elara, you're overreacting." Daniel's voice was tight. "This is purely professional. You're misunderstanding the situation - "

"Professional?" I laughed, sharp and bitter. "What kind of 'professional relationship' involves million-dollar gifts?"

"I don't give a damn what you two have been doing."

"But right now? You're going to strike her. Twice. In front of your entire pack."

Shocked gasps echoed through the speaker.

"You've lost your MIND - " Daniel started.

"Refuse if you want," I cut him off, flipping the journal open. "Let's see... ah, here we go. 'Watched my Alpha training today. He's so beautiful when he fights. I took a photo when he wasn't looking...'"

"STOP!"

His roar made the phone vibrate.

Footsteps. Fast and heavy.

Then -

CRACK.

The sound of flesh meeting flesh rang out crystal clear.

Freya's shriek could've shattered glass.

"Again," I ordered.

CRACK.

Harder this time.

Something clattered to the floor - probably that bracelet.

Dead silence followed.

I snapped the journal shut, satisfied. "Good boy."

I ended the call and poured myself bloodwine - the good vintage from the Crimson Hollow Vineyards.

My mind drifted back to our mating ceremony three years ago.

Daniel's smile had been perfect. Practiced. Precise.

When our fathers clasped hands and spoke of "strengthening pack alliances," everyone knew exactly what that meant.

This was never about love.

He was the Blackthorn Pack's golden heir.

I was the Hartley Pack's prized daughter.

Two perfect specimens, put on display and labeled "ideal match."

My phone buzzed - video from Scarlett.

The footage showed Freya fleeing the hall, hands covering her face, mascara streaming.

Daniel stalked after her, expression carved from stone.

The final frame zoomed in on that bracelet - now in even more pieces than before.

Twenty minutes later, the doorbell chimed.

Security feed showed Daniel on my doorstep, soaked from the rain, tie hanging loose, eyes blazing with barely controlled fury.

I hit the intercom. "Stay there."

Then killed the feed.

Let him stand in the storm a bit longer.

Scarlett called, practically vibrating with excitement.

"That was INCREDIBLE! What was in that photo? Teach me your ways! I need to know how to handle my mate like that!"

I chuckled. "Simple. Stop caring. The moment you stop caring, you hold all the power."

She groaned. "Yeah, that's not happening for me."

Of course not.

She and her mate were true bonded - childhood sweethearts who'd been inseparable since they could walk.

Genuinely, disgustingly in love.

"Aren't you worried he'll retaliate?" she asked.

"Retaliate?" I scoffed. "HE'S the one flaunting that beta around. I'm just responding appropriately."

Behind me, the door crashed open.

I turned slowly.

Daniel stood there, drenched and furious, water pooling at his feet.

His voice came out low and dangerous.

"Where. Is. My. Journal?"

Chapter 3

I didn't answer.

Just held his stare, unblinking.

He tried to match my intensity - Alpha dominance rolling off him in waves - but after a long moment, his shoulders sagged.

He dropped onto the couch like a puppet with cut strings.

"I did what you demanded," he muttered. "What else do you want from me?"

"Did I ask you to make a spectacle of yourself?"

My voice stayed level. Controlled.

"Or did I ask for an explanation? Because I'm still waiting for one."

His jaw worked, but no words came out.

"I know exactly what you're going to say," I continued. "That nothing's happening. That it's all perfectly innocent."

I moved closer, my wolf prowling just beneath my skin.

"So tell me - why did you banish your last assistant for getting too close? What was it you said? Something about boundaries?"

"Yet you gift THIS beta a million-dollar piece from House of Silverclaw."

"You're not stupid, Daniel. You know EXACTLY what that signals to the pack."

"Your constant protection of her? That's why she thinks she can disrespect your MATE."

His face twisted with each word.

"I pulled her file," I said quietly. "Zero appraisal experience. Zero qualifications. So how did she end up at Blackthorn Auctions?"

Silence.

"You're using her as a replacement, aren't you? A stand-in for Aurelia."

My voice dropped to barely a whisper. "You found someone who looks like your dead mate, and now you're reliving the past through her."

"Am I wrong?"

Something in him finally broke.

Daniel buried his face in his hands, shoulders shaking.

"Stop," he choked out. "Please, Elara, just STOP - "

I pulled his hands away, forcing him to meet my eyes.

Tears streaked his face.

"I love you," I said softly, cupping his jaw. "That's why this HURTS. That's why I'm angry."

I paused.

"Do you love me, Daniel?"

His voice came out barely audible.

"Yes."

That single word hung between us.

I reached into the drawer beside me and withdrew the journal, placing it carefully in his lap.

"Because I love you, I would never destroy what matters to you most."

My fingers traced the worn leather cover.

"But my love isn't infinite. Disappoint me again, and there won't be a third chance."

Daniel pulled me against him - hard and desperate.

Then his mouth was on mine, and we were falling backward onto the bed.

My spine arched involuntarily as his hands found bare skin.

The silk nightgown tore like paper.

I tasted copper - one of us had drawn blood.

"Remember something," I gasped, nails digging into the back of his neck. "This is your ONLY warning."

His response was a growl that was more wolf than man.

"Won't happen again."

Word spread through the supernatural community like wildfire.

Alpha Blackthorn had publicly struck his beta assistant.

At a CLIENT dinner.

Freya's reputation shattered overnight.

Nobody confronted her directly - wolves rarely do.

But her assignments got smaller. Less important.

Colleagues stopped making eye contact.

The auction world runs on perception and politics.

When Daniel signed off on her disciplinary report without hesitation, the message was clear.

She'd fallen from grace.

Freya got demoted from appraiser to assistant.

Her salary dropped.

Her benefits vanished.

Mistakes started piling up - small at first, then increasingly serious.

Eventually, she hit the threshold for termination.

Jackson, Daniel's executive assistant, personally delivered the paperwork.

But I underestimated her desperation.

Pale morning light filtered through Daniel's office windows at the Fangwood Manor headquarters.

Freya stood in the center of the room wearing a white linen dress - completely out of place among the sleek modern furniture.

Hand-embroidered flowers decorated the hem, some of the stitching already coming loose.

She'd spent three nights recreating it from old photos.

Photos of Aurelia Blackthorn.

"Alpha Blackthorn..."

Her voice trembled just right.

"I don't understand what I did wrong..."

Daniel stood with his back to her, staring out at the rain.

The termination notice sat on his desk, red seal stark against white paper.

"They said I'm not qualified," Freya continued, letting her voice crack. "But last week you told me I was doing excellent work..."

She looked up, tears cutting through her carefully applied makeup.

"My mother's still in the hospital. The treatments..."

She grabbed his sleeve, nails catching in the fabric.

"If I lose this job, I can't pay for her care. Please, Alpha. I have nowhere else to turn."

Lightning flashed.

For just a moment, looking at that face - so similar to Aurelia's - Daniel was back in that warehouse.

Back in his worst memory.

He stormed into Jackson's office minutes later, fury rolling off him in waves.

"Who authorized you to interfere with pack employment decisions?!"

His voice made the windows rattle.

"I PAY you. And you use that position to go after MY wolves?"

Jackson didn't flinch. "With respect, Alpha - who exactly are YOUR wolves?"

Daniel's eyes flashed gold. "You're DONE. Get out. NOW."

That afternoon, he came home and unleashed that rage on me.

"Elara!"

His roar shook the house.

"Do you have to be so VICIOUS?"

My entire gemstone collection went flying - the cabinet overturned, precious stones scattering across the floor.

A Bloodstone Ruby from the Eastern Territories rolled under the couch.

A cutting tool embedded itself in the leather furniture.

Daniel advanced through the wreckage.

"You think destroying my things gives you POWER? You think I'll just SUBMIT?"

"Let me make something clear - Freya STAYS. She's my personal assistant now."

"And being my mate doesn't mean you control me!"

The door slammed hard enough to crack the frame.

I stood there for a long moment.

Then slowly crouched down and picked up a shard of broken crystal.

It sliced into my palm.

Blood welled up, dripping onto the scattered diamonds.

Beautiful, really.

Like dark flowers blooming.

My wolf stirred, eyes flashing to the surface.

Alright, Daniel.

You want to fight?

Let's fight.

But don't expect mercy.
